insight… in sight…

Thinking more about the subconscious process behind my art lately …

Work emerging from the studio the past two weeks appear again to be channelling my time spent studying and sketching reedbeds and pools/channels on the north Norfolk saltmarsh coast.

Initially these were experimental pieces with mixed-media (inks and acrylics etc) on watercolour board and paper. But having left them alone for a few days, then coming back and working into them with that lovely rust colour for instance, they definitely evoke reedbeds and water to me. The first one below from a close viewpoint, the second from further away.

But I’ve also been considering this: they’re not just about distilling what I see or feel, my work seems increasingly to recall my physical experience; the journeying and exploration of my chosen terrain. So some motifs may appear more than once and at different scales, because I see the same place/object or experience the same feeling or sensation several times as I go, turning and watching, stopping and walking back to study some more.

Having been working towards abstraction in my interpretation of the landscape over the past decade, it’s intriguing (and a bit thrilling) to get this insight into the way my own process works.

from Venice to London…

I’m off to London by train tomorrow to deliver these 3 recent paintings for final judging for the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Exhibition 2017 at the Mall Galleries, London.

I was fortunate to get 2 through the final selection last year (which I wrote about in this post), so I’m delighted to have had 3 through the preselection process this year. These are from my current series of works inspired by the Venetian lagoon and its islands. You can see others in the series on my website here.

thinking ink…

Having fallen behind with posts last couple of months, I’ve a fair bit of catching up to do. These are my latest playing around pieces, with inks, carried out in a rather cold studio this month.

The first two below also use paint pens, ink pencil and acrylic paint.

I already use acrylic ink in liquid, pencil and block form in my mixed-media pieces, but I bought a few of the new Muted range of Liquitex acrylic inks recently and enjoyed experimenting with them. I did find that, for me, the muted ‘grey’ (purple really) and the muted violet (purple) need to be combined with other colours to bring out their beauty, but they’ve increased my arsenal so I’m happy. I also got the muted turquoise, which isn’t that muted and a bit garish for me, but never mind.

Oh, and they also mix successfully with acrylic paint too.
