Open studio. Mari French 2014

welcome to my studio, all ready for the first day of Norfolk Open Studios 2014 tomorrow. This is the first time I’ve opened up this new-ish studio of mine and I’m looking forward to sharing it with friends and visitors.

Hope they can get up the steep stairs!

I’m open for this long Bank holiday weekend and then the weekend of 7 and 8 June (the last day of Open Studios). There aren’t many others open close by, so I’m hoping that the many visitors to the popular Castle Acre Open Studio Trail 8 miles to the south, will venture my way too.

Will let you know how it goes.

Good luck to all other artists holding their own open studios at this time.

driven to abstraction…

two canvases I’m working on this week…

These were existing pieces that weren’t work for me. My thinking was if I wasn’t happy with them and reluctant to hang/show them then I may as well be bold and change them. So I decided to take the plunge and paint over/adjust them, to differing degrees, to see what might develop.

Has it worked? Not sure yet, I need to live with them for a while.

Feedback would of course be greatly appreciated, thanks.

memory of sunlight…

I love the ethereal effects resulting from natural light pouring through windows onto walls, especially in older buildings.

I photographed these images in my home earlier in April, as the afternoon spring sunlight flickered and filtered through to produce this chiaroscuro play of light and shadow on the wall.

Straight from my digital camera, they’re not altered or enhanced in any way, apart from a slight cropping on one. If I could produce this kind of image in my painted artworks I’d be one happy bunny.

I’m a bit obsessed with photographing light in this way (you can see more of my images in the photography gallery in the menu above).
