About Mari French RI

Mari French is emerging as one of East Anglia's most respected abstract painters. She grew up in Manchester close to the Pennine Hills, originally working as a graphic designer. She then lived for several years on the Isle of Skye developing her abstract landscapes. Mari now lives in Norfolk, working as a full-time artist, from her studio on a former 1930s RAF airbase. The roots of her paintings lie in her deep-seated affinity with landscape and weather, capturing the elemental forces of wild and less-visited landscapes. She says about her creative process “I try to evoke the shift of weather and light on a place and this is reflected in the sense of movement and change in the work itself. I sketch on location but in the studio I work instinctively, using a variety of media to evoke my experience of a place rather than a representation”. Mari has exhibited widely; she regularly exhibits with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (RI) at the Mall Galleries, London; she has also exhibited with The Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) at Bankside Gallery, London; was a finalist in Artist & Illustrator Magazine's 'Artist of the Year' 2016; and a finalist in The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2014. In 2022 she was elected a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI). Her work has been featured in both the ‘Artist’ and ‘Artist & Illustrator’ magazines as well as in several art books and is held in private collections around the world.

falling back to earth …

My most recent painting, shown below, is another mixed-media on paper (approx 55x44cm), titled ‘Falling back to earth’, but one which took me rather by surprise. I’m conscious that most of my work still has discernible land/sky horizons, and while I’ve enjoyed producing them, for a long time I’ve wanted to allow the work to become more abstract, though still influenced by my experience of the landscape.

Then this one happened, seemingly out of the blue, though of course that is too simplistic. I know this will be a culmination of what I’ve been painting over the past months/years – all the ‘successes’ and ‘failures’, but it feels completely subconscious.

I feel more confident in leaving lots of white space now, or editing into the work with white.

(See some of my recent work here).

I’ve also used a new blue-grey here too from Amsterdam acrylics, which combines with the red and the pink quite satisfactorily. And, crucially, I’ve stopped myself overworking the piece!

These occasional surprises are one of the joys of experimental painting for me.

A trip to Water Colour anyone?

John A. Hancock’s response to a recent post of mine. John’s blog is always enjoyable and it’s great to get a view on water colour from ‘across the pond’…

It is SO nice to get a note or postcard in the mail, especially if it has some fun or exciting art image(s)! And while I can’t pin it to my studio board … I can savor an e-message or ev…

Ancient and Modern…

My solo exhibition, ‘Breathing space’ at Anteros Arts Foundation, Norwich, which has now finished was a selection of my recent abstracted landscapes. It was particularly exciting for me to see my latest series of work framed and hung together.

The Main Gallery at Anteros is a lovely medieval space in which to hang works of art. I liked the contrast of my own contemporary work with the ancient architecture.

Many thanks to all those who made the effort to visit and wrote such lovely comments in my guest book!
