veils of colour…

My first oil painting in nearly forty years! I love the soft veils of colour possible with oils. I normally work fast, hence my usual use of acrylics, but I so enjoyed this!

Regular visitors to this blog will know I’ve been working in acrylics, with and without other media, for a number of years, so it will be interesting to see which way I eventually go now.

After painting this I enjoyed bashing acrylic onto another canvas, wiping off etc. Acrylic seems to appeal to the impatient exuberant side of me, whereas using oils I found calming, almost meditative. (unfortunately the light wasn’t great, hence the not very sharp photos).

rust and totems …

I am finding industrial landscapes, objects and interiors as potentially a rich source of inspiration for my abstract artworks as rural landscapes. In fact I can see a kind of landscape in some of my photos here.

The rich patina of marks, scuffs, rust, paint and general usage all bear witness to an intriguing, sometimes forgotten, history, whilst their shapes, colours and textures will undoubtedly haunt my future work.

A quiet beauty… a totemic presence…

Some people are a little bemused by my new love, others see it as a natural progression of my artwork and love it enough to buy it, for which I am very grateful.

These are a just a few of my own photos of humble places and objects, which I find I keep coming back to, so I thought I’d share them.

collagraph experiments …

This week’s experiments with printing collagraphs… incorporating printed material (both found and self created on Lokta paper). 

The subject matter in these is deliberately more abstracted than my recent collagraphs. The plate was mount board with texture paste brushed on (perhaps a little too much on the last one below ‘Fathoms’). I use cerulean blue ink a lot, but mixed this time with a little raw umber, which gives a lovely depth of colour.

Really enjoyed producing these and I’ll be experimenting further along these lines. I’ll keep posting the results.
